Seeing Stars Leiden
See the stars from your own window! It sounds like a fairy tale, but Leiden is dedicated to stargazing on September 25th 2022. During the night of Seeing Stars Leiden, Citizen Science will try to answer many burning questions!
In collaboration with UNESCO and artist Daan Roosegaarde, we'll try to make the stars visible for everyone and create a feeling of togetherness.
For 1 hour, all lights in and around the Leiden Observatory will be turned off. The more lights we turn off, the more stars we'll be able to see in the sky. Will you join us?
"Everyone's living in their own bubble, seperate from each other", says Daan Roosegaarde. "I realised there's an impressive light show happening every night, but it's hidden. Seeing Stars brings the stars back to your street. The stars are only a lightswitch away."
Kathleen Ferrier, chairwoman of UNESCO Commission the Netherlands: "More than 80% of the world population lives under a sky that is polluted by artificial light; a barrier that withholds us from experiencing the beauty of the universe. Everyone should have the right to see the stars in a non-polluted sky. Looking at the stars makes you feel connected to each other, after all, we're all part of the same cosmos. This is the communal and universal legacy that I strive towards. Seeing Stars is an important step in the right direction."
